"The Starter" recaps the week gone by in golf. PGA Professional Brendon Elliott, a three-decade industry veteran, provides his insights for RG. In this installment, Elliott breaks down the exciting conclusion to this year's PNC Championship.
The 2024 PNC Championship at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando continued the tradition of its previous 26 editions, offering an exciting display of family bonds, fierce competition, and exceptional golf. This unique event pairs past major champions, Hall of Famers, and other greats of the game with their family members, which can include sons, daughters, grandchildren, and even parents. The PNC Championship consistently provides unforgettable moments, demonstrating that golf is an ideal sport to be shared among families and across generations.
The Dynamic Duo: Tiger and Charlie Woods
Without question, all eyes were on the legendary Tiger Woods and his son, Charlie, as they positioned themselves well on Saturday to win their first PNC Championship title on Sunday. Tiger, a golfing icon, has captivated fans for nearly three decades. Since Charlie made his debut at the PNC Championship at the age of 11 in December 2020, the Woods family legacy has continued to grow. This year, the father-son duo impressed spectators with their remarkable combination of skill and determination, drawing large crowds and creating an electrifying atmosphere throughout the tournament.
Making Aces: Charlie Woods' Moment of Glory Was Not to Be Outdone
A standout moment of the championship came when Charlie jarred his first-ever ace on the par-3 fourth. As his tee shot found the bottom of the cup, the crowd erupted in celebration, leading to Charlie having to do a double take, as he initially did not know what had happened. Poppa Woods then grabbed Charlie and, with a massive Tiger grin, gave him an enormous bear hug, which added a heartwarming touch to this milestone moment.
Not to be outdone, Paddy Harrington, son of three-time major champion Padraig Harrington, made the day's second ace on the par-3 eight. Before yesterday, the PNC had only seen one hole-in-one in its 27-year history.
A Two-Team Race Down the Stretch Leads To Playoff Drama
Despite their remarkable performance, the Woods duo encountered intense competition from Team Langer, resulting in an exhilarating playoff showdown. The iconic champion, 67-year-old Bernhard Langer, renowned for his strategic brilliance and unwavering spirit, was joined by his 21-year-old son, Jason. The pair were this year's defending champions after winning the 2023 PNC Championship with a score of 25 under par, finishing two shots ahead of Team Duval.
Team Langer and Team Woods separated themselves from the field, coming down to the final few holes, and both had an opportunity to claim victory on the final hole. At the close of regulation, this clash of the titans had the teams deadlocked at a record-setting 28-under par.
In the playoff, both teams made birdie on the first hole, a replay of the par 5 18th. On the second playoff hole, both teams had opportunities to make an eagle once again. Tiger and Charlie went first but settled for a simple tap-in birdie. Jason Langer had the first chance at his team's 20-foot eagle putt. Although he missed, he gave his father an excellent line on his putt. The unflappable elder Langer then sealed the event by sinking the long eagle attempt, edging out Team Woods by a stroke.
Team Langer's surprising playoff victory over Team Woods may have taken some by surprise. However, it was a testament to Bernard's extensive experience and ability to perform under pressure. The head-to-head matchup between these two teams, led by Hall of Fame fathers from different generations, created a surreal atmosphere that can only be experienced at the PNC Championship.
"I seem to enjoy that challenge to be the underdog or to play in tough circumstances. It just helps me to zero in even more," Langer said after the win. Anyone who has watched the 47-time PGA TOUR Champions winner in action knows this is true.
Tiger shared his thoughts after the day by saying:
"I know we didn't win, but it was the fact that we competed. No one really made a mistake out there. We had to earn it, and that's what you want to have. Hats off to Langers. They played amazing."
Tiger Looking Healthy
Tiger has battled many injuries and ailments over the years, and none have been more painful for him than those of the past couple of years. One of this weekend's most notable headlines was that Woods looked as healthy as he has in a very, very long time. Going back to Friday's Pro-Am and on through today, Tiger walked almost every step of the way the past three days with virtually no limp or signs of pain.
Tiger will be the first to admit that he has a long way to go before he is tournament-ready. However, what we saw this weekend was as encouraging a sign as fans have seen in quite some time. 2025 should be exciting if Woods can continue to progress as it appears he is.
