June Revenue Insights

TRENTON, NJ
New Jersey sportsbooks took in $790.42 million in bets during June 2025, a steep drop from the billion-dollar handles posted earlier this year. Even so, the month delivered $91.86 million in gross gaming revenue and $13.09 million in state taxes, thanks to an 11.62 percent hold rate, the highest the state has seen this year.

The slowdown in betting volume was notable. Compared to May’s $1.01 billion handle, June was down nearly 22 percent. The decline was even more pronounced than January’s $1.15 billion, the biggest month of 2025 so far. Yet despite the lighter wagering activity, revenue held up better than expected. June’s $91.86 million in revenue outpaced every month this year except January and May.

The tax haul mirrored this trend. June’s $13.09 million in state taxes was lower than May’s $14.61 million but still well ahead of the year’s early spring months, including February ($10.48 million) and March ($10.17 million).

This unusual combination, characterized by a lower handle but higher hold, illustrates the impact of betting outcomes on operator performance. With the NBA and NHL seasons wrapped up before June and baseball dominating the calendar, sportsbooks may have benefited from more favorable results, along with higher-margin wagers like parlays and early NFL futures.

While June’s betting total was the smallest of 2025 so far, the month underscores an essential point for both analysts and policymakers: volume alone doesn’t determine revenue or tax take. The hold rate can swing state returns by millions, even in slower months.

With the NFL season looming, the next few months will show whether New Jersey’s handle can rebound to the billion-dollar mark and whether sportsbooks can sustain these elevated win rates.
