Tragedy struck in New York City on Monday evening as four people were killed by a shooter who entered a Manhattan skyscraper with an M4 rifle. On Tuesday morning, Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that he was targeting the NFL headquarters, per ESPN.
Around 6:30 PM, surveillance cameras caught Shane Tamura crossing a plaza and entering the building, ultimately firing shots across the lobby. Among those killed were a police officer working security and a woman who was trying to hide.
The NFL HQs share a building with Blackstone, a world-renowned investment firm. Tamura approached the elevator before shooting two more men in the lobby. The headquarters are on floors 5 through 8 of the 44-storey building, per ESPN, but Tamura accidentally went up to the 33rd floor, which is occupied by the management that owns the building. He shot and killed another before taking his own life.
"Our officer, he was slain in the entryway to the right as soon as he entered the building, the suspect entered the building," Adams said in a TV interview. "He appeared to have first walked past the officer, and then he turned to his right and saw him and discharged several rounds."
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell revealed that one of the league’s employees was badly injured in the incident:
"One of our employees was seriously injured in this attack. He is currently in the hospital and in stable condition," Goodell wrote in the memo, obtained by ESPN. "NFL staff are at the hospital and we are supporting his family. We believe that all of our employees are otherwise safe and accounted for, and the building has nearly been cleared."
Goodell also said they will increase the number of security personnel in the weeks and months ahead at the building following this scary turn of events. The NFL employee reportedly had surgery on Tuesday morning, per sources close to ABC.
Tamura reportedly suffered from CTE and placed blame on the NFL for his brain disorder. He was a high school football player in California as a teenager.
"He seemed to have blamed the NFL," Adams said. "The NFL headquarters was located in the building, and he mistakenly went up the wrong elevator bank."
Tamura had a history of mental health issues. He was 27 years old and resided in Las Vegas.
