The First Four Tips Off

Since its inception in 2011, when the NCAA expanded the tournament to include 68 teams, the First Four has served as a preliminary stage to the NCAA Tournament. This expansion allows for the inclusion of the four lowest-ranked conference champions and the four lowest-ranked at-large teams, who compete to fill the final spots in the 64-team field.

First Four Schedule

Tuesday, March 19

  • Scheduled for a 6:40 p.m. ET tip-off, Wagner (16-15) vs. Howard (18-16). The victor will secure the No. 16 seed in the West, setting the stage for a matchup with No. 1 seed North Carolina on Thursday, March 21.
  • Following this, at 9:10 p.m. ET, Colorado State (24-10) vs. Virginia (23-10). The team that emerges victorious will claim the No. 10 seed in the Midwest, earning the opportunity to go against No. 7 seed Texas on Thursday, March 21.

Wednesday, March 20

  • At 6:40 p.m. ET, Grambling State (20-14) will play against Montana State (17-17). The victorious team will be designated as the No. 16 seed in the Midwest, with a subsequent game against No. 1 seed Purdue scheduled for Friday, March 22.
  • Following that, at 9:10 p.m. ET, Colorado (24-10) will take on Boise State (22-10). The winner of this contest will become the No. 10 seed in the South, setting up a match against No. 7 seed Florida on Friday, March 22.
